Choi Woo-sung is joining MBC’s upcoming office political drama “Law of the Line,” reuniting with Jang Ki-yong five years after the two shared the screen in tvN’s “My Roommate Is a Gumiho,” TenAsia reported on Sunday.
Choi will play Lee Yoon-jo, a first-year banker on the private banking team at Nara Bank’s Myeongdong branch. Lee is a so-called “black tie” — an employee with no school ties, no regional connections, and no backing — who shoulders heavy sales quotas and a pile of administrative work in his first year on the job. It is a ground-level view of the bank’s hierarchy, seen through the eyes of a newcomer with nothing to trade on but his own effort.
“Law of the Line” follows Tak Do-il, a bank employee with no connections who shakes up the bank’s power structure with a gift for office politics. Jang Ki-yong plays Tak, a graduate of a regional university who overturns the bank’s internal power games, while Oh Jung-se plays Chun Kyung-ho, the vice president of Nara Bank’s sales group and a leading candidate for the bank’s presidency. MBC announced Jang and Oh as the drama’s leads on October 19, Soompi reported, and the series is also Jang’s first MBC drama in about nine years.
Behind the camera, the series brings together a heavyweight team. Kim Sung-yong, who directed “The Veil” and “My Dearest,” directs, Eun Gi-baek writes the script, and Kang Eun-kyung — the writer behind “Bread King Kim Tak-gu” and the “Dr. Romantic” series — joins as creator. The drama is produced by MOst267 and GeulLine, and Korean outlets have described it as an office political noir — a workplace drama built around alliances, ambition, and psychological battles over the bank’s throne. The Friday-Saturday drama is scheduled to air in the first half of 2027, though MBC has not yet announced an exact premiere date.
The casting reunites Choi and Jang five years after “My Roommate Is a Gumiho,” which aired on tvN in 2021. Jang played Shin Woo-yeo, the nine-tailed fox who falls for Lee Dam, played by Hyeri, while Choi played Lee Dam’s younger brother Lee Dan — making the two prospective brothers-in-law on screen. This time, they meet again inside the same bank, with Choi’s rookie banker working under the shadow of Jang’s political operator.
Born in 1997, Choi is signed to AM Entertainment, the agency also home to Kim Woo-bin and Shin Min-ah. He debuted in 2019 with JTBC’s “At Eighteen” and built his profile through supporting roles in “Welcome 2 Life,” “The King: Eternal Monarch,” “It’s Okay to Not Be Okay,” “Sell Your Haunted House,” and “Melancholia.” His breakout came in 2024 with MBC’s “Chief Detective 1958,” where he played detective Jo Kyung-hwan in his first leading role, gaining around 28 kilograms for the part. The series closed at 10.6 percent nationwide ratings. This year, he appeared in Netflix’s “Can This Love Be Translated?” as manager Kim Yong-woo and in TVING’s “I Am a Running Mate,” and shed about 30 kilograms for “A Bona Fide Killer.”
With Choi now aboard, the “Law of the Line” lineup is nearly set, and attention turns to when MBC will lock in a premiere date for the first half of 2027. For Choi, the role marks his next step after a year of physical transformations — from a 28-kilogram gain to a 30-kilogram loss — and a return to the network where he scored his breakout.
