JTBC’s new weekend drama ‘Final Table’ opened with a collision, not a meet-cute. Genius chef Kang Han, played by Ahn Hyo Seop, entered struggling restaurant Familia seeking a childhood taste, then clashed angrily with owner Choi Song-i, played by Hong Hwa Yeon.
According to MK Sports, the series premiered on October 24. Written and directed by Kim Do-hoon, and presented by SLL, ‘Final Table’ follows Korean chefs from around the world as they gather for ‘The Table: K-Chef 2026,’ a competition to crown the best Korean chef.
Kang Han’s past explains why Familia hit him so hard. After years overseas, he returned to South Korea two years ago, living in seclusion while honing his cooking to serve the finest table to his late father. Having finally prepared a memorial table for his father, he was ready to return to the United States.
Before leaving, he stopped at Familia to taste again the best dish he had once shared with his father. Instead, he found a quiet restaurant far removed from the bustling place he remembered, and food that disappointed him in both taste and condition. Feeling as if a precious memory of his father had been damaged, he entered the kitchen and accused the restaurant of sullying Familia’s name.
The accusation cut deeply for Choi Song-i. Her father, Choi Seung-hyo, died after being framed for opposing the Pyeongyeon Group, leaving Familia without its owner-chef and on the verge of closure. Song-i, who had struggled to protect her father’s restaurant, burst into tears. Moments later, a kitchen fire extinguisher suddenly exploded, throwing Familia into further chaos.
The premiere also set up the competition at the heart of the series. Hit by Choi Seung-hyo’s death, the Pyeongyeon Group began producing a cooking survival show to repair its image. Its general producer, played by Jung Yoo-jin, invited a renowned chef to serve as a judge and began recruiting chefs to compete, leaving open who will compete.
The premiere builds on the show’s premise: Kang Han, a Korean chef who worked overseas, enters a high-stakes contest against chefs from varied backgrounds. Director Kim Do-hoon previously directed ‘The Moon Embracing the Sun’ and ‘Royal Family,’ and MK Sports praised the premiere’s abundant, twelve-dish-table-like visuals.
What comes next is whether anger and tears at Familia can turn into an alliance, and who will emerge as the competition’s true top chef.
