Breaking: Netflix Ousts Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria in Major Leadership Shake-Up cover

Netflix has ousted chief content officer Bela Bajaria in a sweeping leadership shake-up, according to reporting by Bloomberg and the Los Angeles Times carried by Yonhap News Agency on October 27. Film chief Dan Lin and original series director Carolina Garcia were also dismissed, and Peter Rice, a former Walt Disney Company and Fox executive, is set to succeed Bajaria as chief content officer.

The departures have exposed a long-running fault line inside Netflix between its Hollywood content operation and its Silicon Valley technology teams, a clash the Los Angeles Times described as pitting the company’s tech-startup roots against its ambitions as a Hollywood giant.

Bajaria, appointed global television chief in 2020, expanded Netflix into reality programming and live sports, a push credited with attracting tens of millions of new subscribers, though critics said her focus on broadly popular fare risked turning it into a Walmart-like discount store.

That balance has shifted this year: effective viewing days per user have fallen, average viewing time is down, and titles such as Little House on the Prairie and Beef 2 disappointed. Content executives blamed interface changes or poor promotion; product teams blamed content quality.

No official statement was available. The Yonhap report attributed the dismissals to Bloomberg and Los Angeles Times reporting on October 26, rather than to a Netflix announcement.

The divide dates to co-founder Reed Hastings, whose pioneering recommendation algorithm and emphasis on content created a left-brain, right-brain culture split between Silicon Valley technologists and Hollywood executives. Hastings stepped down in 2023, leaving Greg Peters and Ted Sarandos as co-chief executives.

In the past three years power has shifted to the Hollywood content organization and its 20-billion-dollar budget. Tech teams were frustrated by the content division’s unilateral 2024 NFL Christmas game deal and faults during the November 2024 Tyson-Paul broadcast.

Lin, who joined in 2024, cut the film slate sharply and reportedly rejected proposals from Steven Spielberg and Peter Chernin, while the Duffer brothers, Noah Baumbach, and David Fincher moved to rivals or declined to renew. Peters’s gaming push also failed.

Netflix is not financially troubled: third-quarter revenue rose 12 percent to 12.87 billion dollars and net profit jumped 44 percent to 3.7 billion dollars, but shares have fallen about 45 percent over the past year to 63 dollars. Attention now turns to Rice and whether he can close the content-technology rift.
