Comedian Lee Hee-kyung has welcomed her first child, announcing on October 31 that she gave birth to a son on October 30 after an emergency caesarean section prompted by preeclampsia.
According to a Sports Chosun report carried by Naver on October 31, Lee shared the news herself on social media, telling followers that her son had arrived the previous day. The 43-year-old comedian said the birth came earlier than planned: her due date had been November 5, but sudden symptoms of preeclampsia led doctors to perform an emergency caesarean section on October 30.
Lee said both she and her baby are doing well. She said her blood pressure and other readings have returned to normal since giving birth, and that her recovery has been faster than expected. She also noted that she was on her second day after surgery and was recovering steadily, despite the pain that follows the operation.
“Fortunately, both my baby and I are healthy now,” Lee said in her announcement, expressing gratitude to those who helped her through the delivery.
The birth closes a long chapter in Lee’s personal life. Lee debuted as a comedian through KBS’s 25th public recruitment class in 2010, before marrying a businessman seven years her senior in 2016. After a decade of marriage, she announced her pregnancy earlier this year, a moment that drew wide attention because the couple had waited so long for a child.
Lee had previously spoken openly about that wait. She said she and her husband had tried for a baby for a long time without success, and that by age 43 they had finally gathered the courage to visit a fertility clinic. Just before in vitro fertilization treatment was due to begin, she conceived naturally, a turn she described at the time as a miracle and a blessing.
That history gives the October 30 birth its emotional weight. A pregnancy announced after ten years of marriage, followed by a sudden medical complication and an early emergency delivery, ended with Lee reporting that mother and child are both healthy and that she is recovering quickly.
Lee has not shared further details about her son in the announcement reported so far. For now, she said she is focused on recovery and thanked supporters for the messages she has received since sharing the news.
