Kim Ji-won Goes Solo in Surgery as Son Hyun-joo Asks If She Is 'Doctor X' in Episode 8 cover

In episode 8 of SBS’s “Doctor X,” Kim Ji-won’s Gye Soo-jung breaks through a hospital-wide resident walkout to operate alone, and the night ends with Son Hyun-joo’s Bu Seung-kwon asking her directly whether she is the mysterious “Doctor X.” The October 31 episode turns a staffing crisis into the drama’s sharpest identity cliffhanger yet.

According to Sports Kyunghyang, the residents’ collective strike brings most surgeries to a halt and throws the hospital into chaos. Children bear the heaviest cost, the report stresses, as the short-staffed pediatrics ward cannot cover urgent cases.

At the center of the crisis is 10-year-old Yoo Ga-eul, a pediatric cancer patient with a rare tumor of the nervous system who has already undergone eight cycles of chemotherapy. Her high-difficulty operation faces indefinite delay, with no surgeon or assistant team.

With no assistant available, Gye Soo-jung volunteers to operate alone. Bu Seung-kwon offers to widen her contract terms if she finishes within the scheduled time, and she replies, in the report’s translation, “I never fail.”

Do Yoon-sik, played by Kim Young-min, argues every doctor has failed and fear of failure drives doctors to strike or leave. Gye Soo-jung answers that she acts because she does not want to fail, while he does not act for the same reason.

Before that operation, Professor Hwang Min-gu collapses, and Gye Soo-jung completes a solo laparoscopic operation. Bae Heung-gon, played by Lee Sung-wook, marvels that few surgeons in Korea could do it alone. When Do Yoon-sik suggests delaying Yoo Ga-eul’s surgery, she refuses, saying she will not let the child hurt even one more minute.

In the final scene, Bu Seung-kwon tells hospital director Jang Hee-sook, played by Lee Jung-eun, that a past article about “Doctor X” matches the skill he has just witnessed, and asks, “Is Teacher Gye Doctor X?” No answer follows.

The cliffhanger carries weight because “Doctor X: Age of the White Mafia” is one of autumn’s biggest hits: Kim Ji-won plays a genius surgeon taking on corruption at Guseo University Hospital, and episode 6 set a series high of 19.5 percent.

The report gives no outcome for Yoo Ga-eul’s surgery and no answer to Bu Seung-kwon’s question. Both are left to the next episode.
