MBC’s “Rookie Director Kim Yeon-koung 2” is officially a ratings juggernaut. The October 18 episode topped Sunday variety in the key 20-to-54 demographic for the second straight week, set a new all-time record for the show in the Seoul metropolitan area, and claimed the top spot on the TV-OTT buzz chart for non-drama programming.

According to Nielsen Korea, as reported by MHN Sports, the episode recorded a 3.3 percent rating among viewers aged 20 to 54, ranking No. 1 among all variety shows broadcast on Sunday for two consecutive weeks. Its 2.9 percent rating among 20-to-49 viewers made it the No. 1 show of the day across the board — ahead of even dramas. The metropolitan-area household rating hit 5.2 percent, the show’s own best record ever.

STARNEWS reported that the night’s per-minute peak reached 6.4 percent during the scene where setter Ha Hyo-rim, who had been playing passively, finally executed plays exactly as her coach instructed and turned them into points.

The buzz metrics tell the same story. According to Gooddata’s FUNdex report, “Rookie Director Kim Yeon-koung 2” ranked No. 1 in TV-OTT non-drama buzz for the third week of October — the first time a terrestrial seasonal variety show has topped the category since 2020. Kim Yeon-koung herself ranked No. 1 in cast-member buzz for non-drama programming.

The episode centered on a high-stakes Japan-Korea rematch: the “Pilsung Wonderdogs,” the team Kim is building as a rookie director, faced Shujitsu High School — the strongest high school team in Japan — for revenge after suffering a comeback loss to them in season 1.

With 13 players starting residential training camp, Kim set the season’s bar bluntly: not survival, but “total victory.” She told the team, “If we show a progressive performance, won’t many companies want to establish Wonderdogs?” — framing every match as an audition for the club’s survival.

Kim also made a bold roster move. After Yoon Young-in, the team’s only opposite spiker since season 1, failed to deliver the expected performance, Kim brought in V-League veteran opposite spiker Hwang Yeon-ju. Hwang, who is older than Kim and played alongside her since their school days, holds multiple V-League records. On the verge of retirement, she decided to join the Wonderdogs for one more challenge — a signing that visibly stunned the players.

The ratings streak continues a strong launch. The season 2 premiere on October 11 opened with a 4.8 percent nationwide household rating and a 6.6 percent per-minute peak, already topping Sunday variety in the 20-to-54 bracket. The show’s core mission remains unchanged: build a real professional team — the would-be eighth club — or disband for good.
