Netflix has unveiled the final trailer for Lee Chang-dong’s “A Possible Love,” the Venice-winning drama that lands on the platform worldwide on November 6.
The trailer opens on Jeon Do-yeon’s Mi-ok strolling down an alley, singing the classic song “I Know Only Love” with a smile that barely masks a mournful expression. Thinking of her husband Ho-seok (Sol Kyung-gu), a laid-off laborer, she says: “There’s something inside you, and you’re afraid to pull it out.” The footage traces the collision of two couples — Mi-ok and Ho-seok, and documentary director Ye-ji (Cho Yeo-jeong) with her husband Sang-woo (Jo In-sung) — who meet through a documentary shoot and find their separate lives and buried desires entangled. A tearful on-camera confession draws Ye-ji and Mi-ok closer than director and subject, while Ye-ji’s proposal of a shared vacation at a villa sets up the film’s slow-burning tension.
The trailer leans into the film’s critical coronation, flashing pull quotes from international critics: IndieWire’s David Ehrlich awarded it an “A,” calling it “a Lee Chang-dong work so astonishing it stops the heart”; New York Magazine’s Bilge Ebiri hailed “a film for the ages”; Variety’s Jessica Kiang praised “the radiant, deep resonance of the greatest living director”; Radio Times’ James Mottram cited “dazzling acting”; and The Hollywood Reporter’s David Canfield named it “film of the year.”
The film has already made history on the festival circuit: it became the first Korean film to win the Silver Lion (Grand Jury Prize) at the Venice International Film Festival, followed by the TIFF Ebert Director Award at the Toronto International Film Festival’s Tribute Awards and the Audience Award at the Mill Valley Film Festival. Directed by Lee Chang-dong from a script he co-wrote with Oh Jung-mi, the film is produced by Pine House Film, Anonymous Content, and Now Film as a Netflix film, and drew strong responses from domestic theatrical screenings and the Busan International Film Festival. The film also took Best Picture at the 46th Korean Film Critics Awards earlier this week, with Jeon Do-yeon winning Best Actress.
“A Possible Love” streams globally on Netflix on November 6.
