Actor Lee Shin Young is trading his bright on-screen image for raw brutality in director Park Hoon Jung’s upcoming action noir “Triste Tropiques,” transforming into Lu, a hearing-impaired killer who survives on pure survival instinct.
New stills released by distributor Mindmark show Lee fully immersed in the role, handling machetes, firearms, and rough terrain with ease. According to Korean media outlet Herald Muse, Lu is the youngest member of the killer organization “Sad Tropics,” who grew up like brothers under their master in a remote rainforest. After the master’s death, the members vow bloody revenge as suspicion grows among them.
What sets Lu apart is that he cannot hear. He detects enemy movements through even the slightest vibrations in sound, surviving among ruthless killers with extraordinary animal instincts alone. Rather than technical finesse, his action style is rough and destructive, driven entirely by survival instinct. Lee reportedly conveys the character’s complex inner world through his eyes and sign language alone.
The preparation was grueling. Lee learned American Sign Language before filming began and underwent intensive action training three times a week, with each session lasting three to four hours or more. Martial arts director Kim Jung Min, who oversaw the film’s action sequences, praised the transformation: “He has a bright and kind image, but when he transforms, he becomes a beast. Even in extremely demanding scenes, he performed most of the action himself with tremendous intensity without a stunt double, and I was proud and amazed.”
His co-star Kim Myung Min echoed the praise. As reported by Soompi, Kim said Lee “conveyed all his anguish and sadness through a single facial expression without any dialogue,” adding that he maintained the exact same emotional intensity across dozens of takes and called him an outstanding actor with a very promising future.
The film reunites Park Hoon Jung, the director behind “New World” and “The Witch” series, with a star-studded ensemble. Kim Myung Min plays the master who rules the rainforest and trains abandoned children as killers, Park Hae Soo plays Jang, the eldest member of the organization, and Park Yoo Rim plays Jojo, who ventures into the jungle to find the master. Taiwanese actors Austin Lin, Chen Yi Wen, and Wang Po Chieh round out the international cast. Filming took place in Thailand after being announced in October 2024.
“Triste Tropiques” is slated to open in Korean theaters on November 25, with the first teaser poster and trailer released this week. Fans can now get an early look at what may be Lee Shin Young’s most physically and emotionally demanding role to date.
