Roy Kim gave 20-year-old Park Dae-hee hard-won honesty on the October 12 episode of SBS’s ‘Our Ballad 2,’ warning the newcomer that being noticed for his looks first could cost him years.
According to SBS Entertainment News, Park said he is chasing his 13th dream: making music that stays in people’s memories. He teaches guitar chords to elementary school students at an academy, and said the job brings him one step closer to his dream.
Park performed Asoto Union’s ‘Think About Chu,’ the song that first gave him his singer-songwriter dream. The Top 100 judges pressed their buttons as if charmed, and the studio filled with cheers. Host Jeon Hyun-moo shouted ‘I love you, I love you,’ while the male judges jokingly showed jealousy over his tall build and looks.
Roy Kim spoke from experience: ‘There’s a side of Dae-hee’s future I feel sorry about. When you first appear, if your looks appeal to the public before your singing ability or skills, breaking out of that takes a really long time and effort.’ Fellow judge Jung Seung-hwan laughed, agreeing it would not be an easy journey.
Moon Geun-young was equally taken, calling his voice ‘totally my type’ and saying she wanted to hear a passionate ballad from him. ‘Behind the soft, sweet voice there’s a firm yet slightly husky tone,’ she said, drawing laughter when she declared, ‘I’m a forward woman.’
For Park, it was a night his 13th dream started looking a lot more real.
