Yoo Yeon Seok and Seo Hyun Jin Reunite in MBC's 'Liar' 10 Years After 'Dr. Romantic' cover

Yoo Yeon Seok and Seo Hyun Jin are sharing the screen for the first time in a decade — this time as adversaries, not lovers. With only 10 days left until the premiere, MBC’s new Friday-Saturday psychological thriller “Liar” (Korean title 라이어, also reported in English as “The Perfect Lie”) has released new teasers spotlighting the two stars’ tense face-off.

Yoo plays Min Joon Ho, a man who insists he is telling the truth, while Seo plays Kang Ji Sun, a woman who claims her version of events is the real one. According to Soompi’s coverage of the drama’s character posters, Joon Ho is a cardiac surgeon raising his young son alone after his wife’s death, and Ji Sun is an elementary school librarian and teacher. The two enjoy a seemingly perfect first date — then get swept into a shocking incident, after which their accounts of the same memory collide completely. “Liar” premieres on October 30 at 9:50 p.m. KST on MBC, directed by Jo Young Min (“You and Everything Else”), whose delicate handling of emotional shifts has drawn early praise.

In interviews reported by MHN Sports, Yoo explained he played Min Joon Ho from inside the character’s own logic rather than tipping off the audience. “The same line can sound completely different depending on whose perspective you hear it from,” he said, adding that he balanced his emotions so they neither spilled over nor looked deliberately hidden. He described the drama as a story that looks beyond the truth of one incident to how people come to believe — or doubt — someone’s words. Seo said she was drawn to the script’s complex relationships, psychological warfare, and layered emotional arcs, summing up Kang Ji Sun in a single word: “strength.” The production team, per MHN, praised both leads for carrying roles that demand extreme emotional range and relentless concentration, noting that Seo’s meticulous, high-energy work on set left the crew in awe.

The project marks the pair’s reunion 10 years after SBS’s “Dr. Romantic” (낭만닥터 김사부), which peaked at a 27.6% nationwide rating. Back then they played a romantic relationship; in “Liar” they meet as two people locked in endless confrontation, good and evil deliberately hard to tell apart. Both actors have since built acclaimed filmographies across genres, and anticipation is running high that their chemistry will translate from romance to rivalry. Soompi’s coverage of the stills and posters similarly highlights how the teasers flip the mood from romance to thriller in an instant.

“Liar” is a high-density psychological thriller about one memory, two opposite claims, and the search for what really happened. It premieres Friday, October 30 at 9:50 p.m. KST on MBC.
