JTBC is betting its December schedule on a Goryeo-era war epic, releasing new stills of Ahn Bo Hyun and Lee Sung Min as two escort leaders who must learn to fight on the same side. The network’s new Saturday-Sunday drama, “God’s Beads,” is set to premiere in December, with the pair fronting a story about a sacred relic, a desperate war and a partnership forged under fire.
The stills, released by JTBC and reported by TenAsia on November 2, show Baek Gyeol, played by Ahn, and Choi Gu, played by Lee, on the relic escort mission at the heart of the series. In some frames the two are heading into the field together; in others they are squared off against each other, a visual shorthand for a relationship that the production presents as the drama’s central tension.
“God’s Beads” is set in 1258, in a Goryeo kingdom worn down by more than 30 years of war with Mongolia and facing defeat. An escort team rushes onto the battlefield to recover the Gwaneum Boju, a sacred relic described as the nation’s last hope, while a princess works to save the people risking their lives for it. The premise gives the series its stakes at once: the relic is not a treasure for its own sake, but something soldiers and civilians alike are counting on for survival.
Ahn plays Baek Gyeol, a former member of the royal guard known as the Gyeonryong Army who now serves as the escort team’s special commander. He is a young general of strong will and drive who also loves the emperor’s daughter, and he tries to lead the mission on his own terms. Lee plays Choi Gu, the commander of the Yabyeolcho, Goryeo’s elite special unit, a veteran who has survived countless battlefields. Where Baek Gyeol is young and headstrong, Choi Gu is cool-headed and shaped by experience, and the two differ on everything from battlefield tactics to how the mission itself should be run.
That clash is the point. The two men share one goal, bringing the relic home safely, but their different beliefs and experience mean they collide at almost every step. According to TenAsia’s report, the production team said the actors bring distinct weight and individuality to the roles and described their chemistry as the best possible pairing, adding that watching the pair argue, then gradually learn to cooperate toward a single goal, will be one of the show’s most interesting threads.
The supporting cast adds further depth to the ensemble. Soo Hyun, Ha Yoon Kyung and Yoon Kyun Sang are also in the cast, alongside the two leads. The series is directed by Jung Dae Yoon, whose credits include “Reborn Rich,” “W” and “She Was Pretty,” and written by Jung Hyun Min, whose credits include “Jeong Do Jeon,” “Nokdu Flower” and “Assembly.” JTBC has said the drama will also reach viewers worldwide through Amazon Prime Video.
The November 2 stills are the latest step in a carefully staged reveal. English-language outlets reported the first Ahn Bo Hyun stills on October 27, noting that the role is his first leading part in a historical drama since his debut, and followed with Lee Sung Min’s character stills on October 28, presenting Choi Gu as a scarred veteran anchoring the drama’s centre. The paired stills now bring those two introductions together, just weeks before the premiere, and English outlets have also billed the series under the alternate titles “Sacred Jewel” and “The Divine Bead.”
The timing matters for JTBC as well. TenAsia framed the drama as the network’s new push at a moment when the broadcaster itself is under scrutiny over a reported sale, with attention focused on whether a big historical production can cut through that uncertainty. A year-end historical drama is a deliberate swing: it is expensive, visually demanding and dependent on its leads carrying both action and romance, and JTBC has placed that bet squarely on Ahn and Lee.
“God’s Beads” premieres on JTBC in December, with a worldwide release on Amazon Prime Video. Reports so far have not given an exact premiere day, so the next announcement to watch for is the confirmed date and the full trailer that should accompany it.
