YG Entertainment refused to license BLACKPINK’s footage and music for Lisa’s documentary “Always Lalisa” — a revelation that has infuriated her fans.
According to Koreaboo’s report, the film’s director Sue Kim discussed the licensing issue in a recent interview ahead of the documentary’s public release on October 12. The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Kim said she wanted the movie to be more than a “K-Pop movie” and to focus on Lisa’s growth as a star: “It was a film about someone who had achieved a great amount of success in a K-pop girl group, but we were covering her year away from that, kind of discovering herself and figuring out a new path for her solo career.”
“Despite our best efforts, we were not allowed to license the music or the footage, so that was it,” Kim said. “That was our only interaction with her previous label and the small amount of the K-pop lore that I wanted to bring into it, we weren’t able to.”
Fans reacted with anger toward the company. One wrote that YG was “denying lisa’s requests and depriving her of an opportunity … how weird … unheard of even,” while others accused the label of withholding copyrighted material as a petty response.
With “Always Lalisa” arriving October 12, the dispute has added controversy to what was meant to celebrate Lisa’s solo journey. No official statement from YG Entertainment was reported.
