PLAVE has set a new career high on the Billboard charts. The five-member virtual idol group’s fifth mini album, ‘HYPERDRIVE,’ debuted at No. 31 on the Billboard 200, according to the chart dated October 31 that Billboard revealed on October 27 local time, as reported by South Korean outlet Sports Seoul and Yonhap News Agency.
The result is a leap of 114 positions from the group’s previous best on the chart. PLAVE’s fourth mini album, ‘Caligo Pt.2,’ debuted at No. 145 earlier this year, marking the group’s first entry on the Billboard 200. ‘HYPERDRIVE’ is therefore the group’s second entry on the main U.S. albums chart, and its first to break into the top 40.
The album performed even more strongly on Billboard’s sales-based charts. ‘HYPERDRIVE’ debuted at No. 1 on the Top Album Sales chart, which ranks albums by pure sales in the United States, and at No. 1 on the World Albums chart. It also reached No. 4 on the Independent Albums chart. The Top Album Sales result means ‘HYPERDRIVE’ was the best-selling album in the United States in its chart week, and Soompi noted it was the group’s first time topping either chart.
PLAVE’s artist rankings moved in step with the album. The group re-entered the Artist 100 at a new peak of No. 25, up from No. 75 with the previous release, and topped the Emerging Artists chart at No. 1. The Artist 100 jump suggests the album lifted the group’s overall profile, not just one week’s sales.
The title track carried the album’s momentum onto Billboard’s global song charts. ‘Star Trace’ entered the Billboard Global 200 at No. 68 on the chart dated October 24, passing the group’s previous best of No. 138 set by ‘BBUU!,’ and held on at No. 84 on the October 31 chart for a second consecutive week. Sports Seoul reported that the album’s four other tracks also stayed on the chart for two straight weeks, showing that listeners were engaging with the full mini album rather than only its title song.
Soompi’s breakdown of the global charts adds detail to that picture. On the Global Excl. U.S. chart, ‘Star Trace’ reached No. 32, followed by ‘GGUN’ at No. 55, ‘Sweet Rain’ at No. 57, ‘The Answer Is Yes’ at No. 66, and ‘Rewind’ at No. 105. On the Global 200, ‘GGUN’ charted at No. 128, ‘Sweet Rain’ at No. 130, and ‘The Answer Is Yes’ at No. 170. All five songs charting globally in the same week underlines how thoroughly ‘HYPERDRIVE’ landed with international listeners.
The Billboard result caps a domestic run that was already record-setting. ‘HYPERDRIVE’ was released digitally on October 12, with the physical album following on October 13, and its first-week counting period ran from October 13 to 19. It sold 1,322,973 copies in that first week, according to Hanteo Chart figures reported by Soompi and Sports Seoul, beating the group’s previous first-week high of 1,255,801 copies set by ‘Caligo Pt.2.’ It is PLAVE’s fourth consecutive album to sell more than one million copies in its first week, following ‘Caligo Pt.1,’ ‘PLBBUU,’ and ‘Caligo Pt.2.’
Domestic streaming backed up the sales story. Immediately after the digital release, all five tracks ranked first through fifth on major South Korean music sites including Melon, Genie, and Bugs, according to Sports Seoul, and the songs were still ranked high on Melon’s Hot100 chart as of October 23. That domestic strength helps explain the Billboard jump, since pure album sales carry heavy weight on the Top Album Sales ranking.
The result also carries weight beyond PLAVE itself. The group performs through animated virtual characters, a format that was unfamiliar to much of the K-pop market when it debuted, and ‘Caligo Pt.2’ made PLAVE the first K-pop virtual group to chart on the Billboard 200. Moving from No. 145 to No. 31 in one album cycle gives the virtual-idol format its clearest U.S. proof point yet. In the same chart week, ‘HYPERDRIVE’ ranked higher than the other K-pop-related albums on the Billboard 200, including the ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ soundtrack at No. 35, KATSEYE’s ‘WILD’ at No. 39, and BTS’s ‘ARIRANG’ at No. 46, according to the Herald Business report.
No statement from PLAVE’s agency, VLAST, about the Billboard result was included in the reports. The chart data shows a group still climbing, with a home sales record, a first top-40 Billboard 200 entry, and two No. 1 album charts. PLAVE is now on its first world tour, ‘KEEP IT MANIC,’ with Macau shows on October 31 and November 1 followed by Los Angeles on November 14.
