Korean film “Assassins” opened the 37th Singapore International Film Festival on October 21, becoming the first Korean film in 22 years to serve as the festival’s opening title.
According to a report by Sports Seoul, the film screened its opening night slot on October 21 and met with an enthusiastic response from international audiences, kicking off this year’s edition of the festival.
The milestone makes the selection especially notable: it has been 22 years since a Korean film last opened the Singapore International Film Festival, underscoring the title’s international pull.
Jeremy Chua, the festival’s executive director, previously praised the choice, saying, “‘Assassins’ has everything expected of an opening film. It is a sweeping, crowd-pleasing epic that retains an auteur director’s gaze, and it is a timely reminder of why press freedom and truth matter.”
The festival run follows a strong showing at the 51st Toronto International Film Festival, where “Assassins” sold out all of its public screenings and finished as runner-up for the International Audience Award.
No official statement was available from the film’s distributor. With attention from festivals around the world mounting, the film’s international run is expected to continue.
