A woman in her 30s has been fined 6 million won for posting a string of threatening and insulting messages targeting actress Han Ji-min on social media.
According to SPOTV News, Judge Lee Ye-rim of the Seoul Central District Court’s Criminal Division 27 handed down the fine on October 16 to a defendant identified only by the surname Lee, who had been indicted on charges of threats and insults.
Between September and October 2024, Lee posted 19 messages aimed at Han Ji-min from her personal SNS account, writing things like “I will sabotage the movie Han Ji-min appears in” and “Shut your mouth.” Investigators found the posts also tagged people close to the actress. The court ruled that spreading false information that damages another person’s reputation or image can itself constitute a threat, and found her guilty on the charges.
In explaining the sentence, the court said there was a need to send a warning against “using anonymity online to criticize and curse others or spread malicious rumors.” The court also noted that the victim had asked for severe punishment out of fear of repeat offenses.
Trusting the defendant’s statement that she had realized her wrongdoing and was reflecting on it, the court urged her to look back on her actions and never repeat the same mistake.
