Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” has officially become the highest-grossing foreign film in South Korean box office history, rewriting a record that stood for nearly four years.
According to a report by OSEN on October 11 citing the Korean Film Council’s integrated ticketing network, the film drew 32,616 moviegoers the previous day, lifting its cumulative admissions to 12,153,983.
That pushed its total gross to 138,352,302,350 won (roughly 138.3 billion won), narrowly edging past the 137.9-billion-won mark set in 2022 by “Avatar: The Way of Water.”
In doing so, “The Odyssey” also left behind the original “Avatar” (about 125.2 billion won), “Avengers: Endgame” (about 122.4 billion won) and “Frozen 2” (about 115 billion won) — every past giant of the Korean box office.
Released on August 5 and distributed in Korea by Universal Pictures, the epic has topped the daily box office since its opening day and held on for more than two months. It was the first foreign film of the year to pass 10 million admissions, and has kept setting records up to 12 million.
The film follows Odysseus (Matt Damon), the hero of the Trojan War, as he defies the wrath of the gods on his journey home. No official statement from the distributor was available, but with the run still going, the new record may have room to grow.
