Lee Yoon-jeong, the former frontwoman of ’90s mixed punk rock band Pippi Band, has finally revealed why she walked away from the group nearly 30 years ago.
According to a report by Xports News, the revelation came on the YouTube channel “Unobjectionable Attention-Seeker Unnie” (밉지않은 관종언니) on October 15. The episode, titled around the question of why she suddenly disappeared, featured Lee chatting with comedians Kim Mi-ryeo and Lee Ji-hye in what was billed as her first broadcast appearance in 30 years.
Lee debuted with Pippi Band in 1995 and later released the solo album “Jinhwa” (Evolution). She now works as a singer-songwriter and stylist. She left the band after its second full album, “Bul-ganeunghan Jakjeon” (Impossible Operation), released in 1996, just one year after their debut.
She explained that the band’s musical direction never matched her own taste, and she feared being pigeonholed as a punk artist. “I kept telling the older members that I wanted to do electronic music,” she said, adding that the group’s electronic-tinged tracks “Bad Movie” and “How Mr. Yukwae Chews Gum” were born from that desire.
Wanting to go even further, she quit the band and moved to New York to study electronic music, taking voice training along the way. She laughed while admitting she spent more time soaking up the culture than attending classes.
She also spoke candidly about how she funded the trip: beyond club performance fees, her income came from an advertising gig for a product called “Tipicosi,” which she said was the first time a large sum of money had ever landed in her bank account.
