Yoo Yeon Seok and Seo Hyun Jin Face Kim Ji Won's 'Doctor X' as MBC's 'Liar' Premieres October 30 cover

Yoo Yeon Seok and Seo Hyun Jin presented MBC’s new Friday-Saturday drama ‘Liar’ at a production press conference in Seoul on October 28, two days before its premiere. Director Cho Young-min joined the leads at MBC’s Golden Mouse Hall in Sangam, as the psychological thriller prepares to enter the same Friday-Saturday slot as SBS’s ratings hit ‘Doctor X.’

‘Liar’ centres on a man and a woman who give diametrically opposed accounts of a single shared memory and clash as they pursue the truth. Yoo plays Min Jun Ho, a cardiac surgeon and father whose trusted reputation is tested by the incident at the story’s centre, while Seo plays Kang Ji Sun, an elementary school teacher fighting to make her version of events clear.

Yoo told reporters he studied surgery scenes closely and filmed them without a stand-in, a point he linked to his long run of doctor roles. He stressed that ‘Liar’ is not a medical drama in the usual sense, describing it instead as a psychological thriller built on detailed emotional arcs that should keep viewers returning week to week.

That distinction matters because ‘Liar’ premieres on October 30 at 9:50 p.m., the same night ‘Doctor X’ airs its seventh episode. Kim Ji Won stars in the SBS series as Gye Soo Jung, a genius surgeon from a doctor-dispatch background, and its sixth episode reached 19.5 percent nationwide. In Gallup Korea’s October survey, the series also ranked first among programs Koreans most often watch, with a 9.8 percent preference share.

The premiere also marks a reunion a decade in the making. Yoo and Seo last starred together in SBS’s ‘Dr. Romantic’ in 2016, which averaged 20.4 percent nationwide and peaked at 27.6 percent for its finale, with the pair winning best couple honours at that year’s SBS Drama Awards.

Yoo later played paediatric surgery professor Ahn Jeong Won in tvN’s ‘Hospital Playlist,’ whose first season finale averaged 14.1 percent on pay television and whose second season finale averaged 14.1 percent and peaked at 15.5 percent.

Whether ‘Liar’ can convert that history and its thriller premise into a Friday-Saturday foothold will be tested immediately, with its opening episode going directly against a rival already near 20 percent.
