Jennie Drops 'Someone to Hold' for Netflix Animated Film 'Steps' as First Animated Film OST cover

BLACKPINK’s Jennie has released “Someone to Hold,” her first song for an animated film, as part of the soundtrack for Netflix’s upcoming animated feature “Steps.” The track arrived on streaming platforms at 2 p.m. KST on Friday, November 6, just weeks after Netflix first announced her involvement in the project.

Sports Donga reported on Friday that the release marks Jennie’s debut in the animated-film soundtrack space. “Steps” reimagines the Cinderella story from the perspective of her stepsister Lilith, framing the familiar fairy tale as an action comedy with a fresh point of view.

“Someone to Hold” is a ballad inspired by vintage dance pop, built around the bond between sisters and the warmth they share. The song underscores the film’s emotional climax, and its placement there has made it one of the most closely watched moments of the soundtrack. Even before its official release, the track earned a nomination in the animated film song category at the Hollywood Music in Media Awards.

Jennie said working on the track was a joyful first. “I am so excited to join the ‘Steps’ family and it was really fun making my first song for an animated film!” she said in a statement shared by Netflix. “I love how much heart and personality the characters have, and I’m so happy I got to be a little part of their world.”

The song is one of four original tracks on the “Steps” soundtrack, all written and produced by Justin Tranter, with Jennie leading a lineup that also includes Amanda Seyfried, Rose Gray and EMEI. Kris Bowers composed the film’s instrumental score. Directed by Alyce Tzue and John Ripa, the film features a voice cast led by Ali Wong, Seyfried, Stephanie Hsu, Nikki Glaser, Daniel Radcliffe, Peter Dinklage and Bette Midler, with Amy Poehler’s Paper Kite Productions among its producers. The full soundtrack arrives on November 20, the same day “Steps” premieres globally on Netflix.

The release caps a busy solo year for Jennie, whose collaboration with Tame Impala, “Dracula,” has spent time in the Billboard Hot 100 top 10, and who released her digital EP “Fallen Angel” in August. The October announcement of her “Steps” role drew heated online reactions aimed at Tranter, but no statement from Jennie’s side had been issued at the time.

With “Someone to Hold” now out, the full soundtrack and the film itself follow in two weeks, on November 20.
